Bakong Temple is located in the compound of the ancient capital of Hariharalaya (in the area that today is called Roluos), south of Preah Ko Temple, about 13 km from Siem Reap City. This temple was built by King Indravarman I in 881, dedicated to Shiva in Brahmanism. According to the inscriptions of this temple, its original name was Indresvara.
