April 17th is a Memorial Day of Cambodian History

April 17th is a Memorial Day of Cambodian History.

In April 1975, twelve divisions of the Khmer Rouge force surrounded Phnom Penh and were about to enter the capital. In the early morning of April 17th, 1975,

people living in Phnom Penh could hear the sounds of battles and fights of the approaching Khmer Rouge forces. At 09.00 am, the soldiers of the Khmer Rouge entered the city, and disarmed Lon Nol forces quickly, with no prospects for negotiation. Phnom Penh’s inhabitants were genuinely happy and stood on the side of the road welcoming the arrival of the young Khmer Rouge soldiers. They thought that the civil war was over and that they could finally live in peace again. Even Lon Nol soldiers followed the call to surrender, laid down their arms, and joined people on the side of the streets to welcome their enemies’ victory. They all dreamed about peace in the country, the peace they had missed for the last five years of civil war.
